  • Counts as a full high school fine arts credit
  • Works as a standalone elective
  • Complements history, literature, and worldview studies

Many homeschool art appreciation programs emphasize short lessons, creative projects, or casual exposure to famous artists. While those can be enjoyable, they often fall short of providing the depth, structure, and worldview training needed for high school credit.

Students don’t just learn what art looks like—they learn what it communicates and why it matters.

Why you’ll love it

  • Full-credit, year-long art appreciation elective designed specifically for high school students
  • Combines art history, biblical worldview, and hands-on creative activities
  • Gives parents confidence that their teen can study art safely without "questionable content"
  • Students will learn how to evaluate and appreciate art through God’s truth
  • Portraits of the Masters encourages independent learning while maintaining depth

Meet the Artists Behind the Masterpieces

Your teen studies 21 master painters in chronological order, from the Renaissance through American Realism. Artist studies connect their lives and beliefs with the work they created.

Learn to Describe What You See

The seven elements of art give your teen words to explain how a painting works. A glossary helps them understand and use art vocabulary as they study.

Evaluate Art Through Scripture

Your teen uses God’s Word to consider the ideas an artwork communicates. Biblical discussion helps them think through what makes art good, excellent, and worthy of praise.

Give the Art a Rating

“Give It a Rating” sections invite your teen to form an opinion about the artwork. They practice explaining their thoughts using what they’ve learned about art and Scripture.

See How Art Connects With Its Time

Callout boxes connect the artwork with the world around the artist. Your teen sees how historical events and ideas influenced art, and how art influenced culture.

Show What They’ve Learned

Midterm and final reviews help your teen revisit the artists and ideas they’ve studied. The final project offers a choice of activities, and an included answer key supports your grading.

  • What are the credentials of the Not Consumed team?

The Not Consumed team exists for one purpose: to help your family grow in faith so you can live #NotConsumed. We are homeschool parents with over 220 years of combined homeschooling experience, advanced degrees in education and curriculum design, and a deep love for serving families well.  Everything we create is anchored in Scripture. We keep it practical, clear, and easy to use because we know your days are already full. We believe the best learning happens when families gather around God’s Word together. That’s why we create resources for different ages and stages, so everyone can take part.

  • What do you believe?

We are Bible-believing evangelical Christians. It's our mission to create products that handle the Word of God accurately and literally. We aim to get families into the Word for themselves and challenge them to read and think about it carefully rather than relying on the words and ideas of others. We believe all families should be asking about the theology of the resources they use, as nothing is neutral and everything has a worldview. Here is what we believe:

The Bible is God's Word and the final authority for everything we believe and how we live. It is completely true and trustworthy in all that it says, given to us by God down to its very words. There is one God who has always existed as three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God created all things, including human beings, by His own direct act. Salvation is a free and forever-secure gift, received by grace through faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus came in human flesh, was born of a virgin, and rose bodily from the grave. He will one day return in person, in His own body, to reign on the earth for a thousand years. This return will be personal, bodily, and premillennial.
