Our Consumer Math course provides a full credit of high school Math. This curriculum applies the math principles your student has learned already to real life situations they will encounter, while also framing everything with a biblical perspective.
Throughout this course, your student will engage in and learn to solve the kind of math problems that come up in real life. Consumer Math helps them understand the value of stewarding their money wisely and gives them practice comparing and calculating prices in order to make the best choice for their budget.
Budgeting and understanding income versus expenses is a huge hurdle for young adults today. Consumer Math breaks this down, helping students to evaluate what financial responsibility looks like and preparing them to approach life from the perspective of wisely stewarding what God has graciously given them.
Various types of income including commission, hourly wages, and tips are described in detail and immediately followed with a practical application. Students are then challenged to apply what they've learned, seeing exactly how these concepts apply to and affect their lives.

God has blessed the Not Consumed team with a great deal of education (including a variety of degrees) and decades of combined homeschool experience. Several team members have subject specific degrees or master's degrees in education, specifically curriculum design.
I believe that the Bible is the absolute authority in matters of faith and practice. It's 100% true, with no exceptions or figurative sections. I believe in the verbal, plenary inspiration of Scripture; in one God eternally existing in three Persons; in the creation of all things, including man, as the direct act of God; in eternally secure salvation by grace through faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ; in the incarnation and virgin birth of Christ, and in His bodily resurrection; in the personal, bodily, premillennial return of the Lord Jesus Christ and His millennial reign on earth.
Though schools can be accredited, there is not an accreditation program for curriculum.
Students preparing to take Consumer Math should have completed middle school math and have a solid understanding of basic math concepts such as multiplication, division, percentages, fractions, and decimals. We do not recommend starting Consumer Math prior to 9th grade. We recommend taking this during the 11th or 12th grade since it is primarily based on real life scenarios. Completing the course as close to the time to use those skills would be most beneficial.
Consumer Math is an independent learning-based course and does not require a teacher’s manual. A digital Answer Key that can be downloaded to your device is available. The Answer Key includes parent instructions, project grading checklists, and calculation answers.
There are many similar topics covered in both subjects. However, the course was designed as a consumer math course, so you may find some topics covered at different levels than expected in a personal finance course.
There are 22 independent projects within the course that are similar to an assessment of the material because students have to apply what they have learned to complete the project accurately. Grading checklists are provided in the Answer Key.
Consumer Math has 239 pages, covers 16 different units, and includes 22 projects.
Lessons should be completed 4-5 times per week. Lessons should take one day, while projects can range from 2-7 days. Each project has a golden badge with the recommended number of days for completion.
Consumer Math is written using USD (United States Dollar), traditional US savings and retirement terms, and the American customary measurements of inches, feet, yards, and miles, which affects many of the word problems in the text. Students are given opportunities to research various costs of items in their area for projects.
My 17 year old daughter has always struggled with math, made more frustrating by her constantly challenging me with, "Why do I need this? When will I ever use this?" As a very bright young lady who will never ever want a STEM career, it was hard for me to make higher math relevant for her. But I wanted her to have the skills to "math in real life." She just needs one more math credit for high school, and I was glad to find this resource! Firstly, it's all in one book, no need to flip around between online/ book/ etc to complete lessons. She's able to see immediately why she needs to know these things, and tie it all back to her own life right now. She's referring to her own pay stubs from her part time job to understand withholdings and deductions, and is engaged. She likes that each step is explained to you with hints and equations provided. Finally, she's not asking me, "When am I *ever* gonna need this?!" Math is no longer the biggest drag of our homeschooling day!
My son completed Calculus 1, but won’t have time to complete Calculus 2 before the end of this year (his Senior Year). I wanted him to have a math program this year, but also wanted him to have a good idea of what to expect when he is out on his own. This curriculum has been amazing so far and I truly believe every high schooler needs to take this before heading out on their own!
We love this Consumer Math/Personal Finance course! My homeschool daughter is currently using this for her senior math course. It is user friendly, fun, and so helpful for getting kids ready for life after high school! She is coming to me regularly to tell me how surprised she is that college is so expensive, or how many hours she’s going to have to work to pay for a car, etc. This course helps them budget, shop for groceries, do taxes, plan for college, and so much more! Highly recommend!
My daughter is just starting this curriculum this year and I think it's amazing. She is doing a deep dive into researching careers, how to prepare for them, what the average salary is, and even seeing how withholdings and investments work. I think it's a really valuable experience for her to study before she heads out on her own.
I love that this math curriculum actually pertains to skills needed in everyday life. I also love that it is written with Godly principles to get my son thinking on the right track concerning finances and life.
This math is an excellent course to teach your child practical concepts and principles they will need and use in life. I was very pleased that it begins each chapter with a Bible lesson of how the math they will be learning applies to the Word of God. My 11th grade son has been using it for a couple weeks, likes it and is doing well with it, what a difference from past years of stressful math curriculums. Thank you to the families of Not Consumed who put out this wonderful practical math curriculum and offer it at such a reasonable price!
I wanted to give our 11th grader something different and practical for math this year. There aren’t many up-to-date consumer math programs out there, so I was thrilled to find this great resource! She tells her friends about what she is doing and practicing for math and they say they wish they could have a useful curriculum. This program teaches applicable, practical concepts that will actually help my daughter in life.
I truly love how this curriculum weaves God throughout the pages. I like how the questions make the student think about their future goals and different scenarios they may face.
Math class in our homeschool has always been a struggle. We have tried many programs with our high schoolers through the years, and most of them ended with a frustrated or tearful child. This is the first time one of my children has come to me and actually said they like their math curriculum. This has been such a blessing. We will definitely be using this course with our other children .
