Books They Choose. Skills They Build.

Give your teen a full year reading curriculum that helps them think more deeply about fiction and nonfiction while giving them a say in the books they read.

For each book, they’ll set a finish date and determine how many pages to read each day. As they read, they’ll dig into the author’s ideas, purpose, viewpoint, themes, and more. Your teen gets more responsibility, while you know they’re learning without having to manage every step yourself.

With the High School Reading Journal, your teen will:

Analyze theme, symbolism, conflict, mood, tone, and viewpoint

Evaluate characters, ideas, and an author’s purpose

Make connections and support conclusions using what they read

Strengthen writing and vocabulary through focused practice

Hold the ideas and worldviews they encounter up against what God says is true

How to Reason About What They’re Reading

Your teen will learn to recognize what an author is saying, how they’re saying it, and what they think about it.

One day your teen might examine a theme or symbol. Another day they’ll evaluate a character, consider the author’s viewpoint, or work through a new vocabulary word. As the writing becomes more advanced, they’ll develop their own ideas, support them with what they’ve read, and put those ideas into essays. They’re learning not only to understand what they read, but to form ideas of their own.

Why You'll Love It

  • Your teen gets a say in the books they read
  • Clear structure keeps their reading focused and purposeful
  • Includes both fiction and nonfiction
  • 15–20 minutes of independent work each day
  • Includes increasingly advanced writing, including essays

Your teen can choose which book to read next, then work through that book’s lessons in order. The included bookmark helps them keep their place.

Set Your Own Reading Pace

At the beginning of each section, your teen records the book, number of pages, and finish date, then figures out how much to read each day.

Dig Into More Advanced Analysis

Your teen will work with theme, symbolism, conflict, subplots, narrator, mood, tone, viewpoint, style, purpose, cause and effect, and more.

Practice Putting Ideas Into Words

Writing and vocabulary activities give your teen practice developing their ideas, supporting them with what they read, and putting those ideas into words.

  • What are the credentials of the Not Consumed team?

The Not Consumed team exists for one purpose: to help your family grow in faith so you can live #NotConsumed. We are homeschool parents with over 220 years of combined homeschooling experience, advanced degrees in education and curriculum design, and a deep love for serving families well. Every Bible study, family resource, and homeschool curriculum we create is anchored in Scripture and made to be practical, clear, and easy to use, because we know your days are already full.

We believe the best learning happens when families gather around God's Word together, so we create resources that work across ages and stages to make that time meaningful, approachable, and real.

  • What do you believe?

We are Bible-believing evangelical Christians. It's our mission to create products that handle the Word of God accurately and literally. We aim to get families into the Word for themselves and challenge them to read and think about it carefully rather than relying on the words and ideas of others. We believe all families should be asking about the theology of the resources they use, as nothing is neutral and everything has a worldview. Here is what we believe:

The Bible is God's Word and the final authority for everything we believe and how we live. It is completely true and trustworthy in all that it says, given to us by God down to its very words. There is one God who has always existed as three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God created all things, including human beings, by His own direct act. Salvation is a free and forever-secure gift, received by grace through faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus came in human flesh, was born of a virgin, and rose bodily from the grave. He will one day return in person, in His own body, to reign on the earth for a thousand years. This return will be personal, bodily, and premillennial.
