Why Did God Make Me? Helping Your Child Answer the Question Before the World Does

By Kimberly Sorgius Jones

The summer sun was blazing and my kids wanted to be anywhere but the school table. But we had a new spelling curriculum to start, so I sat all three of my big kids down for the same placement test. Calling out one list of words to three kids at once seemed like a win. One test, one afternoon, done. Then we graded them.

Except, I didn't think through how it might go. One of my daughters scored the lowest of the three. And she wasn't the youngest. She sat at that table embarrassed, jealous, and mad, blinking back tears while her siblings looked on.

Here's what I understood later, after I had apologized and we had talked it through. She wasn't crying about spelling. In her mind, that score wasn't a number. It defined her. Her brother was worth more. She was worth less. A ten-minute placement test had told her who she was, and she believed it.

Kids do this math constantly. The test score. The team they didn't make. The friend who picked someone else at recess. The mirror. Every one of those moments asks the same question underneath: what am I worth? And if we don't give our kids God's answer, they will accept whichever answer shows up first.

The World Is Ready To Tell Your Kids Why They're Here

Our culture isn't silent on this. It preaches to our kids all day long: Find yourself. Define your own worth. You are enough.

It sounds kind. It even sounds empowering. But notice where it points a struggling child: inward. Straight back to the very place that just failed the spelling test. Telling my daughter "you are enough" at that table would have been asking her to build her confidence on the exact thing that had just crumbled.

She didn't need a better opinion of herself. She needed to know the God who made her.

That day, we opened Scripture instead. I asked her forgiveness for not thinking about how the test would feel. And then we talked about what God says: that He gifts each of us in unique ways, on purpose, and spelling was never going to be the measure of her. By the end we were laughing and hugging, and she sang me the latest song she had written. Because that's her gift. Music, words and courage were woven into her before I ever met her.

God is amazingly creative in the way He designs each one of us. Our job isn't to rank those designs. It's to discover them and use them to glorify Him.

Why Did God Make Me?

When your child asks this question, and every child eventually does, Scripture gives the best answer. God created your child on purpose, in His own image, to know Him, love Him, and glorify Him. Their worth was decided by their Creator before they ever did anything at all. Purpose isn't something kids have to find. It's something God has already given.

This isn't a participation trophy. It's theology, and kids can understand it. Genesis says God made us in His image. Psalm 139 says He knit us together with intention, down to the details. Nothing about your child is an accident, and nothing about them, not their abilities, their looks, or their friend count, can add to or subtract from the worth God already assigned.

A child who knows why God made them stops grading themselves by the scores at the table.

What Is the Created Bible Study?

Created: Who You Are in Light of Who God Is is a 20-day Bible study from Not Consumed that walks kids through what it means to be made by God, in His image, for His purpose. It comes in Primary, Junior, and Youth levels plus a Parent Guide, so every child in the family studies the same truth at their own level in about 10 to 15 minutes a day.

This is exactly why we created it. The first ten days answer the "why" of how God made them: created on purpose, with purpose, with value, to know, to learn, to love, to obey, to create, to connect, to live. The second ten days turn kids' eyes to the Creator Himself: His tender care, His creativity, His delight, His involvement, His great love, His faithfulness. Because the order matters. Kids understand themselves rightly when they understand Him first.

A few things make this study work in a real home:

Kids open their own Bibles. Every day sends them into Scripture to look up the verses themselves. The answers come from God's Word, not from our pages. That habit outlasts the study.

One topic, every age. Primary, Junior, and Youth levels walk through the same 20 days at their own reading level, with a Parent Guide alongside. Your seven-year-old and your thirteen-year-old learn the same truth, then talk about it at the same dinner table.

It fits your actual life. Lessons take about 10 to 15 minutes, open-and-go, no prep. Two-page daily spreads with short prompts, so deep truth never feels like a textbook.

They build something as they go. A daily sticker page lets kids add to an illustrated scene, turning 20 days of truth into a keepsake they made themselves.

"Isn't My Child Already Getting This at Church?"

Church teaches the gospel broadly, and Created is narrow on purpose. It gives your child 20 days in a row with a single question, why did God make me, and sends them into their own Bible for every answer. Even in a home already rich in Scripture, that kind of sustained focus lets one truth settle deep enough to stay.

Before the Next Placement Test

There will be another spelling test at my table someday. Another low score, another hard moment, because that's life in a real family. But I want my kids to walk into those moments already knowing what the score can't touch: who made them, why He made them, and what He says they're worth. Long before you named your child, God knew exactly why He made them. Created helps them know it too.

Questions Parents Ask

Is Created biblically sound, or is it more of a feel-good study?
Every day sends kids into their own Bible to look up the references themselves. The answers come from Scripture, not the page.

What ages is Created for?
Primary, Junior, and Youth levels cover the same 20 days at each child's reading level, with a Parent Guide alongside. Younger kids work with a parent; older kids go on their own.

Will it be difficult to get my kids to do it every day?
Created doesn't feel like a heavy theology textbook. It's a structured, interactive workbook created for bite-sized daily chunks, about 10 to 15 minutes.
