Every year the trees grow bare and the air breathes a misty frost. December sneaks in and Christmas Carols ring in our ears. As we approach this blessed season of our Savior’s birth, I couldn’t help but wonder what those lyrics really mean. Where did those beloved carols come from? And was there a beautiful story behind it all?
Gloria: A Christmas Hymn study is a 92-page collection of history, scripture and fun. In addition to the story behind the hymn, students are guided through a study of the meaning behind it and the scripture that shares the story of this wonderful event. Each hymn includes the music and lyrics for you to sing and learn, plus a Tin Whistle tablature. This fingering would work for any similar instrument, like a recorder. Of course, there are also copywork pages, coloring pages, word searches and other fun activities to go along with the hymns.
I have written this unit study with the older elementary student (3rd-5th grade) in mind. Should you so choose, this study can be done fairly independently. For younger students, simply work together allowing him/her to take control of any parts that can be handled independently. Of course, you may choose to do this study as a family and that would work perfectly as well!
Copywork is included for each hymn, both in KJV and ESV.
O Come O Come Emmanuel
O Little Town of Bethlehem
Away in a Manger
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
Joy to the World
We Three Kings of Orient Are
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
I pray that your journey through this Christmas season will be blessed as you aim to focus on the Holy Child, born to be our Savior!
